From my very first job, which I guess is 30 years ago this past December, I was required to teach Introductory Evolution and when you do that and you do a lot of reading about it you don’t even really have to teach about evolution to become aware that there’s huge resistance to accepting the scientific conception of evolution by the American public. Only about 40% of Americans accept evolution and only about 12% accept it in the way that we scientists do as a sort of purposeless unguided materialistic universe.
You become aware of that pretty quickly. You find that some of your students are resistant to evolution because it contravenes from their notions about human specialness or about morality or about religion or whatever.

I know it’s arrogant to say this but I have always felt that atheists are better people than theists.
We do things out of the goodness of our hearts and a desire to make the world a better place.
At least I do.
I would respond to this man if only because he is reaching out for a better way, a clearer understanding of his life and the circumstances of his situation.
I like to think we are capable of sowing seeds of rationality that will someday eradicate the weeds of religion that are overrunning our planet and our population.
This type of situation is amount more than this one man, more than the things he has done. It’s about being the people WE are and helping our fellow humans find freedom from religion, especially when they seek it out.
But I may be an unrealistic romantic.
I've Finally Come To The Conclusion That Belief In God Is Primarily Driven By Your Genes And Once Someone Has This Belief In Their Mind As An Adult It's Almost Impossible To Convince Them Otherwise. That Is, Some People Inherit Genes That Lead To A Personality Type That Inclines Them To Believe In God And There's Very Little That Can Be Done To Reverse This Belief In Adulthood, So All Of This Atheist, Anti-Religion Shit I'm Writing Is Having No Effect On Those Whose Genes Predispose Them To Belief In God.
