141 (Dear MaMa I)

Kailua, Oahu Prior To Dining With Hiram Fong!

Catherine Kekoa Enomoto

MY MOTHER SPEAKS PROPER, ACCENT* FREE ENGLISH. MY MOTHER MAKES A VARIETY OF DISHES FROM CULTURES AROUND THE WORLD AND SHE MAKES THEM WELL. MY MOTHER HAS LIVED AROUND THE COUNTRY AND STILL MAINTAINS RELATIONSHIPS WITH PEOPLE AROUND THE COUNTRY (SOME OF WHOM ARE MY DAD'S FRIENDS). MY MOTHER HAS TRAVELED TO A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT COUNTRIES. MY MOTHER HAS DINED WITH POLITICIANS, PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES, BIG TIME BUSINESSMEN, AND THE LIKE. MY MOTHER IS, TO SOME EXTENT, UNIQUE, AND NOT MEXICAN LIKE HOW YOU THINK OF MEXICANS! AS A MATTER OF FACT, WE (MY SIBLINGS, PARENTS, AND I) ARE WHITE TO A LARGE EXTENT (CULTURALLY, SOCIALLY, AND LINGUISTICALLY)

*WHY DON'T I LIKE PEOPLE WHO SPEAK WITH AN ACCENT, ESPECIALLY AN ACCENT FROM A FOREIGN COUNTRY? BECAUSE AN ACCENT DENOTES YOUR DISSIMILARITY TO US. IT SAYS THAT YOU'RE NOT ONE OF US. IT SAYS THAT YOU'RE A MEMBER OF AN OUT-GROUP (NOT A CALIFORNIAN, FOR EXAMPLE). IT SAYS YOU'RE FROM A DIFFERENT GROUP (e.g. A DIFFERENT RACE WITH DIFFERENT GENES) WITH A DIFFERENT CULTURE AND DIFFERENT THOUGHTS, BELIEFS, CUSTOMS, ETC. FROM US (THE IN-GROUP). AND I DON'T LIKE THOSE MOTHAFUCCIN' DIFFERENCES, MOTHAFUCCA. THAT TEXAS TWANG AND PIDGIN SLANG IS NOT TO MY LIKING, MANE!

I DON'T LIKE HOW THIS GUY SOUNDS. HE SOUNDS LIKE HE HAS DIFFERENT GENES THAN ME AND COMES FROM A DIFFERENT CULTURE THAN ME AND THUS HAS DIFFERENT BELIEFS, VALUES, AND MORALS THAN ME. SURE ENOUGH, HE DOES, AND YOU CAN TELL BY THE HEAVY SPANISH ACCENT HE HAS (I HATE SPANISH ACCENTS).

Accordingly, cultural markers actually become a more accurate means of assessing kinship coefficient than do genotypic traits, in this narrow context. This would, in turn, help to explain why most social groups tend to be cultural in nature and, also, why people can be so strongly motivated to defend the cultural group of which they are a part and attack its perceived enemy. An obvious example, in an English context, would be the accent with which a person speaks. This tells other English people the individual's regional and social background and can thus be employed to infer the level of kinship to self. Clearly, how one chooses to dress conveys subtle cues about one's social and, to a lesser extent, geographical background, which likely advertise small genetic differences from those of a different social or geographical background. Indeed, research by Italian geneticist Luigi Cavalli-Sforza (1997) has shown that divisions and sub-divisions of languages correspond remarkably well with populations (as defined by genetic distances) and boundaries of steep genetic  gradients.
