What do the majority of the 87.79% of Hawaiians supporting the anti-Mauna Kea movement have in common? They have in common the fact that their decision to support it isn't based on an unprejudiced, dispassionate assessment of the matter (understanding the purpose of the TMT, being aware of the precautions (safety and environmental measures) taken to construct and operate it, weighing its pros and cons), but rather on an instinctual and emotion laden drive to side with and signal their belonging to their in-group (their anti-American, anti-capitalist, anti-Western intellectual, Native Hawaiian in-group).
A desire to signal one's ethnic identity and political identity combined with a need for one's ideology to be socially and sexually appealing are the basis for Native Hawaiian, anti-TMT demonstrations.
Humans are a hyper-cooperative species—more so than any other animal species. We engage in highly complex and coordinated group activities with non-kin and comply without resistance to requests from complete strangers. Rather than falling apart or running amuck when disaster strikes, research shows that most humans are calm, orderly, and work together to help others. During times of extreme crisis, we forget about our individual differences, backgrounds, and beliefs and unite together for a common cause (e.g., ask anyone closely involved in the 9/11 crisis in New York City the extent they were worried about whether the person they were helping was homeless or a millionaire, religious or atheist, Black or white).
A core component of this evolutionary advantage involved the development of complex social-signaling capabilities that allowed for a quick and safe means to evaluate/resolve conflict and manage potential collaborations. Indeed, our social signaling capacities are more powerful than most individuals realize as they viscerally impact not only the person we are interacting with but our own physiology as well—most often at the pre-conscious level. Slow-motion film analysis has robustly revealed that we react to changes in body movement, posture, and facial expressions of others during interactions without ever knowing it. Indeed, we are constantly social-signaling when around others (e.g., via micro-expressions, body movements)—even when deliberately trying not to. For example, "silence" can be just as powerful as "non-stop talking."
Plus, for our very early ancestors living in harsh environments, the cost of not detecting a "true" disapproval signal was too high to ignore—since tribal banishment was essentially a death sentence from starvation or predation (see Lonely Apes Die). As a consequence, we are constantly scanning the facial expressions and vocalizations of other people for signs of disapproval and are biologically predisposed to construe the intentions of others as disapproving—especially when social signals are ambiguous. This means we are essentially a socially-anxious species. Blank expressions, furrowed brows, or slight frowns are often interpreted as disapproving—regardless of the actual intentions of the sender (e.g., some people frown or furrow their brow when intensely listening). Moreover, being rejected by a tribe hurts—research shows that social ostracism triggers the same areas of the brain that are triggered when we experience physical pain (Eisenberger & Lieberman, 2004). Thus, we fear the pain of social exclusion and our emotional well-being is highly dependent on the extent we feel part of a tribe and socially connected.

Our Genographic team learned some key pieces of information that helped us gain more insight into the peopling of the Caribbean. Most surprisingly, we found that roughly 60% of Puerto Ricans carry maternal lineages of Native American origin. Native American ancestry, higher than nearly any other Caribbean island, originated from groups migrating to Puerto Rico from both South and Central America. Analysis of the Y Chromosome DNA found that no Puerto Rican men (0%) carried indigenous paternal lineages, while more than 80% were West Eurasian (or European)
This leads us to conclude that the Y chromosomes (inherited strictly paternally) of Tainos were completely lost in Puerto Rico, whereas the mitochondrial DNA (inherited strictly maternally) survived long and well. This stark difference has been seen in other former colonies (Brazil, Cuba, Jamaica), but the gender dichotomy appears strongest in the Spanish-speaking Americas. A look into the rest of the Puerto Rican genome using the Genographic Project’s custom genotyping tool, the GenoChip, sheds some light on what may have happened during Spanish colonial times to create this ancestral imbalance.
The average Puerto Rican individual carries 12% Native American, 65% West Eurasian (Mediterranean, Northern European and/or Middle Eastern) and 20% Sub-Saharan African DNA. To help explain these frequencies in light of the maternal and paternal differences, I used basic math and inferred that it would take at least three distinct migrations of hundreds of European men each (and practically no European women) to Puerto Rico, followed by intermixing with indigenous women. It also would necessitate the complete decimation of indigenous men (but not women), to account for those numbers. These results are surprising and also shed light into a dark colonial past that, until now, had remained somewhat unclear.
About 90% of Puerto Rican Y DNA is Spanish. It also looks like something around 70-90% of their mtDNA is Native American. It makes sense because 90% of Spanish colonist were male, so their only option was to marry Native women. African input on mtDNA and Y DNA looks equal, which would make sense if a similar amount of African men and women slaves were brought to Puerto Rico.

Knowing the history of Polynesia, this is not difficult to explain. The Europeans who first visited the Polynesian islands were all men.There simply were no female explorers or whalers or sailors or traders or missionaries; so the arrival of Europeans made no impact whatsoever on the mDNA gene pool of modern Polynesians. As for the prevalence of European Y-chromosomes, if we had no idea of the history of the islands we might imagine this to be the echo of a past military invasion led by men, which would produce a large influx of Y-chromosomes but not of mDNA. But that isn't quite what happened in Polynesia. European men often needed little persuasion to jump ship, and in most cases they were made welcome. In the Cook Islands at least it was not uncommon for mothers to encourage their daughters to marry European men, even bringing them from the outlying islands to Rarotonga specifically for that purpose.
Polynesia changed completely after the arrival of the Europeans. New infectious diseases swept through the susceptible islanders. Social structures crumbled as the old religions were swept away by aggressively evangelical missionaries. It is a familiar story, repeated time and again across the world. But suspend your disapproval for a moment to look at what we had found from a purely genetic point of view. Consider the European arrivals as a case of boy meets girl - or, more specifically, of sperm meets egg. The European ships brought sperm from the other side of the world to fertilize the eggs of Polynesian women, rather than the other way round. There were no European eggs on board - they had all stayed at home. Was sexual selection at work there? The European sperm must have found its way to the Polynesian eggs somehow, either by force or by consent. The records of Polynesian mothers bringing their daughters from the outer islands to marry Europeans suggests at least some degree of female choice, if only by their mothers. What had these new men got to offer that their Polynesian rivals hadn't? These men were not rich by European standards at home, but on Rarotonga they had wealth and status on their side and, as a result, their sperm found eggs to fertilize. Female choice, the engine of sexual selection, was selecting features familiar to us all.
What of the genes themselves? Which were the winners and which were the losers in this exchange? That is an easy question to answer. The clear winners were the European Y-chromosomes. They had displaced the original Polynesian Y-chromosomes in a third of Rarotongan men. European mDNA had got nothing out of this trade at all; it was nowhere to be seen. Polynesian mDNA, on the other hand, had neither flourished nor suffered from the arrival of the Europeans. It had just carried on, blissfully unconcerned by the battle being fought between the Y-chromosomes. A genetic cynic might even say that the whole European exploration of the Pacific had been organized for the benefit of European Y-chromosomes.

Astonishing Thing About This Story Is That Tami Had Never Met Curtis Or
Even Known That He Existed (She Had Never Seen Him Or Heard Of Him
Prior To That Encounter). Yet, She Was Able To Recognize A Voice And
Laugh (A Voice And Laugh That Was Eerily Similar To My Father's, My Aunt Lemomi's, And My Uncle Walter's) That
She'd Heard When Associating With US And Precisely Pinpointed It To
Another Relative Of Ours.
Hey Y'all, Let ME Let Y'all In On A Family Secret. Uncle Walter's Father Was Not Claudio Bagobe Dagampat (The Father Of My Father). Uncle Walter's Father Was Some Other Filipino Man That My Grandmother (Annie Kekoi**) Had A Child With (I Believe He Was Another Filipino Man Who Worked In The Cannery's In Alaska). (So You Only Share 12.5% Of Your Genes With Your Cousins, But Since Uncle Curtis And Uncle Walter Were Only 25% Related To My Father Their Children (My Cousins) Share Even Less Than 12.5% Of Their Genes With My Siblings And I. I Believe They Share 1/2 Of 12.5% Of Their Genes With Us, Which Is 6.25%. That's Not Much Maine!)

Guy) Being A Fighter Pilot And Doing Air Raids On His Homeland, But I Think My Uncle Curtis Changed The Vietnamese Waiter's Mind Once He Started Speaking To Him In Vietnamese.

I'd Never Heard Of Nor Seen Kaimana, But I Imagined That He'd Look Tongan (I Later Returned That Piece Of Mail To The Post Office After Arguing With The Girl That Works There). As It Turns Out (After Now Just Googling His Name), He Could Pass For A White/Tonga/Hawaiian Admixture, Which Proves The Point I'm Making Above.
