That doesn't mean that Dick denies the importance of genes and individual differences that are genetically based. He merely appreciates the fact that all people are like growing plants that interact with their environment, however much their genes influence the rules of engagement. Contrast the growth metaphor with the metaphor of The Bell Curve, which is that each person is born a certain way, like a lead soldier, and remains in the same position for the rest of his or her life.
Each of us is a growing organism with complex rules of engagement for interacting with our environment. The rules of engagement are strongly influenced by the particular hand of genes that we are dealt, making us unique coming out of the starting gate. Then the rules of engagement
